The Capricornian’s 60th Anniversary Celebrations
Posted on October 10th, 2019
Banking isn’t exciting right? Well the 140 guests who attended The Capricornian’s recent 60th birthday celebrations would probably disagree.
On Saturday 24th August, current staff, Directors and suppliers were joined by past long-serving employees and Directors, in what can only be described as a memorable night hosted at the Rocky Sports Club, designed to recognise the sixty year legacy of The Capricornian (Credit Union).
The Capricornian is the only customer owned banking institution based in Central Queensland, with a focus on providing financial products and services that benefit their members and the local community. What began with an idea by a handful of visionary individuals has now blossomed in to a $350 million member owned, full service co-operative financial organisation; employing 46 CQ locals; serving 12,000 members through 7 dispersed branches and contributing in excess of $100,000 a year in community focused grants and sponsorships.
Some impressive milestones and no small feat for this local customer owned credit union.
Customer owned banking is the alternative where customer interests are not in conflict with shareholder interests. The Capricornian is solely customer focused, being able to offer all of the same products and services as the big banks, however 100% of profits are used to benefit members.
The Capricornian Chief Executive Officer Dale Grounds, explained that their 12,000 members are among the 4 million Australian’s that already enjoy the benefits of owning their banking.
“We’re all about people before profits. We’re local and we support local as we know that local is where we live, work, and play. We also have a strategy focused on customer service, backed by the values that underpin staff, management and our Directors, something that hasn’t wavered in our sixty years,” said Mr Grounds.
So whilst talking and thinking about banking might be kind of boring, The Capricornian understands that your money is important to you. What you do with your money and knowing what your bank of choice does with your money, should be important to everyone.
The Capricornian looks forward to evoking local pride and awareness about the benefits of customer owned banking with their ‘Take Back What’s Yours’ branded campaign, to be broadcast across Central Queensland this month. The content for this campaign was filmed right here in Central Queensland to showcase everything the region has to offer and to show the significant impact that owning your banking can have on your local community.
